Being your own boss means being your own boss

A lot of people like the concept of “being your own boss”.

What they don’t realise is that they have to actually be their own boss.

The Dream

It’s appealing. No boss. No one telling you what to do.

The dream is that you will be boss-less.

The Reality

You aren’t boss-less.

You have to be your own boss. This ship cannot steer itself. There’s no autopilot. You have to manage yourself every day.

What’s more, you have to be a good boss.

The Choice

Once you get to this realisation you must make a choice.

What type of boss do you need?

What type of boss does your business need?

Do you want a boss who is overly demanding and unreasonable?

Or would you like a boss that is fair and kind? One who looks after all of your self interests and needs.

There’s been times when my boss has been way too critical, too harsh, too demanding and too unforgiving. He brought up old stuff, dwelled on mistakes and would reletlessly put me down.

I didn’t need that. It wasn’t useful. It did not help me, my work or my clients.

Just like it wasn’t helpful when my boss was too lax, too non-chalant. He wouldn’t care enough and temporarily abandoned his duties as my boss.

I didn’t need any of that. I didn’t need to do it to myself.

Don’t do it to yourself.

Be the best boss

Being your own boss is an opportuntity to have the best boss you’ll ever have.

Be intentional and take your time. Design the best boss for you. The boss you’d love to have. The boss you need to push you, help you grow, keep you on track and have a positive working experience.
